RECOGNITION OF NEW MEMBERS/VISITORS –Judy Wright welcomed visitor Craig Grinstead, son of Dodie Grinstead.  She reported that copies of the roster would be available by e-mailing Nick Barr or Harold Weaver who would in turn e-mail a copy of the roster to them.

REPORTS:

  • Treasurer- JoAnn Drake gave the Treasurer’s report.

CLUB ACTIVITIEST

  • Farewell Get Together – Linda and Leon Rackers reminded members of the farewell social on February 25 at the Phoenix V meeting room, 1:00 PM.  Please bring a salad or dessert to share and your beverage.  Chicken will be provided by the club.
  • Food Drive – Priscella Miller reminded members that they could still bring donations to the breakfast next Wednesday.
  • Magnolia River Boat Trip – Chuck Keppler reported that the boat is full; be at the marina at 9:00 AM for a 9:30 departure.  Please bring exact cash for payment ($20.00 per person) 
  • Golf – Bob Miller said golf is a go today with 32-34 signed up to play.
  • Bob Moore reported the Mardi Gras Party will take place at Phoenix V before the Orange Beach Parade.

OTHER SNOWBIRD ACTIVITIES

  •  Lo’Country Boil –Larry Weber reported the boil will take place Friday at the Zoo.  Workers should report for the first shift at 9 AM; he still needs workers for the 12-2:30 shift.  There are a few tickets still available at the Zoo Gift Shop. 
  •  Trivia Night – Bob Moore said the event was a huge success, raising over $13,000.
Post Script:  The Orange Beach Friends of the Library allocated the proceeds from the 2017 Trivia Night as follows.  
  • $5000 to the Orange Beach Library 
  • $5000 to the Gulf Shores Library
  • $1000 to the Literacy Council
  • $500 to the Arts Council
  • $500 to the Baldwin Pops
  • $250 to the South Baldwin Little Theatre
  • $800 to the Civic Center to purchase a splitter

Also funded was a brick to be placed in the Orange Beach Library sidewalk with the following inscription:

NEW BUSINESS

  • Election of Officers – The slate of officers for the 2018 Missouri Snowbird are:
  • President – Randy Hall; Vice President – Chuck Keppler; Treasurer – JoAnn Drake; Secretary – Toni Ruda.  A motion was made to accept the slate as presented.  It was moved and second; the motion carried by acclamation. 
  •  Dispersement of Funds – Chuck reviewed the income and expenses for this year;  a motion was made and seconded to refrain from making charitable donations until further review could be taken after next year’s season to see what our financial situation was like after a year without Trivia income. The motion carried.  The board will discuss ways to keep activities self supporting and other means to increase and maintain income. 
  • By-Law Review – By-law revisions were shared with members.  A motion was made and seconded to accept the by-laws with the revision to define the signature needed on the bank transaction form (Section 5, C 5 and D 8).

CLUB ACTIVITIES

  • Game Night – Thanks to Nancy and Tom Kuenkel for another fun-filled evening of friendship and Bunko.  Good food and laughs shared.
  • Farewell Get Together – Linda and Leon Rackers – Linda reported that the Farewell Get-Together will be held Saturday, February 25, 1:00 PM in the meeting room at Phoenix V. Please bring a salad or dessert to share and your beverage.
  • River Boat Trip – Carol Keppler – Chuck reminded members of this year’s boat trip in Weeks Bay which will take us down the Fish River on Tuesday March 7.  The cost of the trip is $20.00 each.  Sign up early as seats are limited.  Lunch will follow at Big Daddy’s.  Let Carol or Chuck know if you want to be on a stand-by list in the event of a cancellation.
  • Food Drive – Priscella Miller – donations may be brought to the club meeting or breakfast and they will be delivered to the food pantry.
  • Golf – Bob Miller – We will play at 1 pm at Gulf Shores Country Club.  Golfers should be at the club by 12:30.

OTHER SNOWBIRD ACTIVITIES

  • Brat Fest – Bob Moore - Volunteers are needed for the second shift at 11:30 for clean-up duty.  The event, which benefits the Fire Departments, features brats for $4.00 and takes place February 4 at the Erie Meyer Center.
  • Pancake Breakfast- Randy Hall – Randy thanked volunteers who enjoyed this year’s assignment of delivering batter and he hopes to continue that assignment in the future.  A lot of pancakes were sold for the benefit of the Fire Department.
  • Lo’Country Boil –Larry Weber reported the event on February 17, benefits the Little Zoo and will be the last year it will take place at the “old” zoo.  If it rains, the event will be moved to St. Thomas.  Larry has limited tickets remaining so see him for your ticket.  Missouri club members will again be responsible for parking. First shift volunteers should report at 9:30; second shift report at noon.  Workers are needed.
  • Trivia Night – Bob Moore – Trivia Night is sold out with 78 tables filled.  The event is February 4 at the Orange Beach Convention Center. Doors open at 5; trivia begins at 6. 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

  • Breakfast Sign-up – Please sign up for next Wednesday’s Breakfast at Perdido Resort      9 am.
  • Happy Hour – Cobalts – Monday, February 6 – 4-6 pm 

NEW BUSINESS:

  • Nominating Committee – Election of officers will take place at the final meeting in February. Chuck Keppler, Toni Ruda, and JoAnn Drake will serve as the nomination committee.  Interested candidates are asked to please give names to committee member(s).
  • By-Law Review – The by-laws enacted in 2012 were revisited by Chuck.  He found them ambiguous and felt a need to create a workable document which would be more helpful to incoming officers. A committee consisting of present officers and the past presidents will review the revised document and after refining, will present to the membership for a vote at the last meeting.  It was asked why the club didn’t simply suspend the by-laws and it was explained that as an organization which rotated officers, there was a need for continuity and some of the by-laws dealt with financial matters which needed to be defined.

RECOGNITION OF NEW MEMBERS/VISITORS – Colin and Judy Wright introduced new members Carrie and Jeff Ford from Lake St. Louis and Betty and Joe Reynolds from Oakville.  Judy reminded members to check the roster print-out for any corrections so that a new list can be printed.

REPORTS

  • Secretary – Minutes approved as posted on website mosnowbirds.org. Web Master, Harold Weaver reminded members to make certain they have the most recent copy of the post when checking the minutes or the calendar.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

  • Welcome Back Potluck – Virginia Moore – Thirty five members and guests attended the event and all enjoyed great food and an opportunity to learn more about each other.  It was agreed that we are far from a shy group and actually quite fun-filled.
  •  Chili Cook-Off – Diane Neiman - This year’s event had two winners among the contestants.  The food was delicious and 46 guests had a fun time deciding among the different choices.  Another successful event. Dick Ruda suggested donation $10 toward the cost of participant’s supplies.  A donation jar was another possibility.
  • Game Night – Nancy Kuenkel – January 28, 7 PM, Bunko will be played once again at Phoenix V, 7 PM.  Bring a snack to share and your beverage of choice.
  • Hat Luncheon – JoAnn Drake – Because of the many fashion shows offered by other venues, it was decided that there would not be a Hat Luncheon this year.
  • Farewell Get Together – Linda and Leon Rackers – No report
  • Food Drive – Priscella Miller – Bring canned goods to the meetings to be taken to the Christian Service Center.
  • Magnolia River Boat Trip – Carol Keppler – We will again have the Weeks Bay Boat Trip on Tuesday March 7.  The cost of the trip is $20.00 each.  Sign up early as seats are limited.  Lunch will follow at Big Daddys.
  • Golf – Bob Miller – We will play at 1 pm Wednesday at Gulf Shores Country Club. 

OTHER SNOWBIRD ACTIVITIES

  • Trivia Night – Bob Moore – February 4, doors open at 5; trivia begins at 6.  Fifty tables have been sold to date.  Kate Withers asked for volunteers to score.  Millers will again sell Mulligans.

  • JoAnn Drake stated that at this time we are carrying two accounts in our treasury.  As we will no longer be doing Trivia Night as a club activity, she suggested we combine the two accounts and carry only one account.  Brenda Glaus moved, Bob Moore seconded, that we combine the two accounts.  The motion was carried.

RECOGNITION OF NEW MEMBERS/VISITORS – Judy Wright reported we have one new member, David and Charlotte Gray from Kansas City. Members were asked to verify information on member list and record any incorrect information. Priscilla reported that Peggy Barr was in the hospital and because she and Nick are assisting with the care of their new twin grandbabies, they probably would not be attending too many meetings or functions.  The Wrights will assume their duties in their absence.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

As usual, bring a dish to share and your beverage.   Bob Moore took the opportunity to thank the Missouri Club Members for support for their daughter Katherine in her run for Governor. Larry Weber reported he had the occasion to visit with Gov. Greitens who plans to work with Katherine during his tenure.
•    Chili Cook-Off - Diane Neiman asked anyone planning on participating in the chili cook-off to sign up for the event which will take place January 14, 6:00 pm at Phoenix 5.
•    Game Night - Nancy Kuenkel reported Game Night will take place January 28, 7:00 p m at Phoenix 5. Bring snack to share and your beverage.
•    Farewell Luncheon – Linda Rackers reminded members of our annual farewell gathering to be held at Phoenix V, 1 PM. Please sign up and bring your own beverage and a dish or dessert to share.
•    Magnolia River Boat Trip – Carol Keppler will check on the possibility of doing the boat trip.
•    More information will be forthcoming about the Hat Luncheon, Valentine Social and                               Fat Tuesday Events
 
OTHER SNOWBIRD ACTIVITIES

•    Brat Fest – Bob Moore announced it will be held February 4, beginning at 10:30 am.  More information to follow.
•    Pancake Breakfast- Randy Hall will attend a meeting this afternoon and will have more information at the next meeting.
•    Lo’Country Boil - Larry Weber reported will take place on February 17 to benefit the Zoo. We will have workers directing parking. Tickets are available for$13.00 in limited quantities and also include entrance to the Zoo.
•    Trivia Night – Bob Moore reported that Trivia Night will be taken over by Friends of the Orange Beach Library and will be held February 4, 2017 at the Orange Beach Convention Center.  Volunteers will be needed and members are asked to sign up to help. It promises to be a great event.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

•    Breakfast Sign-up – Please sign up for next Wednesday’s Breakfast at Perdido   Resort at 9 am. The cost will be $10.83.
•    Priscella and Nancy reminded members of the canned food collection – bring items to the meeting and they will get items to the food pantry.

NEW BUSINESS - Chuck attended the Presidents’ Meeting. Several informational offerings were shared including the various different road improvements taking place along the beach road and highway 59.

With sadness Chuck reported that Colliers would probably not be wintering in Gulf Shores in the immediate future. He asked members to consider taking over as President of the club as he offered to serve as Vice President because it is not always possible for him to get to every meeting.

RECOGNITION OF NEW MEMBERS/VISITORS – Nick Barr reported we have one new member, Sally Yates.

REPORTS:

         Treasurer- A detailed accounting is available from Judy or Colin or from the secretary’s record.

Dale dispensed with the regular order of business to discuss Trivia Night.  Judy thanked so many people for their work as the evening is truly a joint effort of the club.  Next year’s Trivia Night will be February 4.  After Judy’s report, Dale opened the floor to a motion for dispersement of the Trivia Night proceeds.  Bob Moore made a motion that we again donate $5,000 each to the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Libraries.  The motion was seconded and was approved unanimously.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

         Hat Luncheon – JoAnn Drake still has tickets for the third annual affair to be held at Perdido Beach Resort on 2/18. Lunch is at 11:30 and will be followed by a fashion show put on by Chicos. Models will be members. The highlight of the afternoon, although, not mandatory, will of course be the hats. Lunch is $15.00 and will feature soup, salad, sandwich makings, and Bananas Foster.

         Golf –Bob Miller reported we will play golf today.  There will be a States’ Scramble at Glen Lakes on 2/25 to benefit the Heritage Museum, $60.00. Many thanks to Russ Reed for his work organizing golf.  This will be his last year.

         Farewell Luncheon – Linda Rackers reminded members of our annual farewell gathering to be held 2/27 at Phoenix V, 1 PM.  Please sign up and bring your own beverage and a dish or dessert to share.

         Magnolia River Boat Trip – Carol Keppler asked all with tickets to be there by 9 AM prepared to pay.  Boaters, and anyone who would like to join them for lunch, will gather at Big Daddys.  In case of rain, the boat ride will be cancelled; however, lunch will still be at Big Daddys.

OTHER SNOWBIRD ACTIVITIES

         Pancake Breakfast- Randy Hall thanked Barrs, Tom Turnage and the Wrights for working.  Next year, instead of dishes, the club will be responsible for getting pancake batter to those preparing pancakes.

         Lo’Country Boil -  Larry Weber reported all tickets are sold.  The event on 2/19 at the will again have workers directing parking.  Brat tickets also include entrance to the Zoo.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

         Nick asked members to check information on Membership Roster to be certain information is correct before it is printed and published.

         Manufacturers Coupons/Food Pantry Donations – Priscilla read a thank you note from the food pantry.  Coupons for service families abroad do not expire; however, they must be clipped and delivered to Priscilla.

         Happy Hour - We will meet at Cobalt for happy hour on February 22 (note date change), from 4-6. 

         Breakfast Sign-up – Please sign up for next Wednesday’s Breakfast at Perdido Resort at 9 am. Dale reminded all of the Valet Parking.

         The first meeting for 2017 will be January 4.  It was moved and seconded and passed that we continue with Chili Supper and Valentine Party and firm up dates once calendar is firmed up. 

NEW BUSINESS

         JoAnn Drake has accepted the post of Treasurer for 2017.

         Trivia Night Proceeds dispersal.

o   A motion was made by Larry Weber and seconded to donate $500.00 from Trivia Funds to the Ballwin Pops.  Motion carried.

o    Larry also moved and it was seconded to donate $1000.00 from Trivia Funds to the Literacy Council.  Motion carried.

o    Nick Barr moved and it was seconded to donate $250.00 from Trivia Funds to the Coastal Choral.  Motion carried. 

o   Dick Drake moved and it was seconded to donate $250.00 from Trivia Funds to Friends of the Arts.  Motion Carried.

         General Fund Dispersal

o   Larry Weber moved and it was seconded to donate $500.00 to the Food Pantry.  Motion carried.

o   Larry moved and it was seconded to donate $250 to the South Ballwin Little Theater.  Motion carried.

         Game Night – Dale thanked Nancy and Tom Kunkel for a fun and successful evening.  Nancy thanked the 60 members who joined in the fun. They hope to repeat the fun next year.

         Mardi Gras Luncheon – Virginia Moore reminded members of the luncheon, February 9th, 11:30 at Phoenix V.  Please sign up and bring something to share…appetizer or dessert and your beverage.

         Magnolia River Boat Trip – Carol Keppler will host this event which is sold out.  Due to limited space on the boat, tickets went quickly.  Boaters, and anyone who would like to join them for lunch, will gather at Big Daddys.  In case of rain, the boat ride will be cancelled; however, lunch will still be at Big Daddys

CLUB ACTIVITIES

         Game Night – Nancy Kunkel invited everyone to join in the fun on 1/30, 7 PM, at Phoenix V for an evening of Bunco.  Please bring a snack to share and your beverage.

         Hat Luncheon – JoAnn Drake is chair of the third annual affair to be held at Perdido Beach Resort on 2/18. In addition to a wonderful lunch, Chicos will feature members in a fashion show of the latest styles.  The highlight of the afternoon, although not mandatory, will of course be the hats.

         Trivia Night – Judy Collier reported we will host our tenth annual event at the Orange Beach Convention Center on 2/13.  Thirty tables have been sold, including one to the Gulf Shores Police Department. Raffle items include a wonderful Branson Package among other exciting things.  Addition items are sought.  Please see sign-up sheets on the front table.

NEW BUSINESS

         Nick Barr reported that his party was denied entrance to the Pensacola Naval Base with a Missouri Drivers.  It was recommended using a Passport for enter.

         Ducks’ Diner, located on Canal Road, has opened a second restaurant on 59 across from the Zoo called Ducks Coastal Kitchen.

         In consideration for all the work that goes into preparing chili for the chili supper, Brenda Glaus made a motion to charge each diner $1.00 for admittance which would be split 50/50 with the club and with the winning cook. The motion was seconded by Kay Williams. After discussion, the motion was carried unanimously.  It was suggested that activities and calendars for the coming year be reviewed at the end of this year to better coordinate activities with other clubs and other functions.

         GSUMC is sponsoring two productions – Three on a String (1/22,23) and Snow Bird Broadway (1/29,30), each are $10.00.

  Club Activities

  Welcome Back Party – Virginia Moore reported the first social will be January 19, 6 PM, in the Phoenix V Meeting Room.  Please bring a pot of food to share, your drinks.

  Phyllis Deem gave a brief description of the Chili Cook Off and asked for 10 volunteers to cook their favorite chili recipe. Held on January 16, 6:00 PM, in the Phoenix V Meeting Room. Dinner will consist of contestant prepared chili for tasting and judging. 

  Game Night – Nancy Kunkel will host the event to take place on January 30 in the Phoenix V Meeting Room at 7 PM and will again feature a fun evening of Bunco.  Bring your drinks and snacks to share.

 

  Remainder of Activities were generally discussed but will be covered as their dates approach.

Trivia Night – The 10th Annual Trivia Night will take place February 13th at the Orange Beach Event Center at the Wharf.  The event, run totally by the Missouri Club and supported by other Snowbird Clubs and local friends, has raised approximately $73,500 over the years for the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Libraries as well as monies for other local organizations such as the Literary Council, Costal Chorale, Baldwin Pops, Friends of the Arts, and the Baldwin Community Theater.  Tickets are $15.00 per person or $120 per table.  The Colliers hope to have a sell-out crowd this year. 21 Tables have been purchased already. The “bring your everything” evening will feature eight rounds of questions.  

  Other Snow Bird Clubs’ Activities

  Pancake Breakfast – Randy Hall is chairman for our club.  The event will take place February 13; funds raised are for the Fire Department. 

  Brat Fest – February 6.  Missouri will once again work the trash detail.  Nick Barr will serve as Missouri Club chair for the activity.  Funds raised are for the Fire Department.

  Lo-Country Boil – Dale Collier attended for Leland Buckler, Larry Weber, chair for Missouri Snowbirds, reported that the event will take place February 19 at St. Andrews Church on Fort Morgan Road.  Funds will once again support the Little Zoo.  Missouri members will park cars.  See Larry if you would like tickets which are $13.00 each and there will 100 fewer tickets this year.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

  Nick reminded everyone of our website, mosnowbirds.org.  Harold Weaver keeps the site up-to-date. Meeting Minutes will be posted there for review.

  Dale announced Happy Hour dates at Cobalt’s as 1/19; 2/23; 3/7 each day from 4:00 – 6:00 PM with use of their private room.  Each will be responsible for their personal checks.

  Pricilla Miller suggested members bring non-perishable items for the food pantry to business meetings for collection.  Members agreed it was a great idea.

  Read and Clip Manufactures coupons for collection by Gulf Shores Woman’s Club to be given to military families around the world.

    • Valentine Party – Judy Wright, Peggy Barr, and Carol Keppler hosted our annual valentine party this year. The highlight of evening was our very own Larry Weber at the keyboard. Our second annual Valentine sing-along and awesome desserts were an added bonus of the event. 
    • Hat Luncheon – Judy reported that the second annual Hat Luncheon held at Perdido Beach Resort on 2/16 was everything she wanted and more.  The chef said it was a pleasure to have the group there and thanked us for our support.  Next year’s luncheon will include a fashion show by Chicos.
    • Farewell Potluck – Linda and Leon Rackers will again host our potluck supper at Phoenix V on Saturday, February 28 beginning at 1 PM.  Linda reminded all to sign up.
    • First Annual Boat Tour – Carol Keppler will host the Scenic Magnolia River Boat Ride on March 5.  The trip will begin at 10 AM and end at noon.  The cost for the event is $10.00 per person.  Chuck said to take 59 north to Highway 98 and go west approximately 8 miles, cross the bridge over the Magnolia River and turn right under the bridge.  Carol suggested wearing layers for comfort.  The group will have lunch afterwards at Big Daddys, County Road 9 and 181 to county road 32.
  • Trivia Night – The 9th Annual Trivia Night will take place February 21st at the Orange Beach Event Center at the Wharf.  Tickets are $15.00 per person or $120 per table.  To date, 66 tables have been sold.  Judy asked scorers, raffle sellers, and mulligan sellers to report at 5 PM to Mickey Weber, Carol and Chuck Keppler, and Bob and Priscilla Miller respectively. The “bring your everything” evening will feature ten rounds of questions.  
  • Other Snow Bird Clubs’ Activities
    • Pancake Breakfast – Randy Hall thanked all who helped and suggested increasing the number or workers next year. The event raised $3300 for the Fire Department. 
    • Brat Fest – $5400 was raised for the Fire Department.
    • Lo-Country Boil –Leland Buckler who reported that the event will take place February 20 at St. Andrews Church on Fort Morgan Road.  Funds will once again support the Little Zoo.  Missouri members will park cars.  See Leland if you would like tickets which are $12.00 each and entitle holders to dinner, a free beverage, and admittance to the zoo.     • Game Night – Nancy Kunkel will host the event to take place on January 31 in the Phoenix V Meeting Room at 7 PM and will again feature a fun evening of Bunco.  Bring your drinks and snacks to share.
    • Valentine Party – A chair is sought to host our annual event. The highlight of evening will be our very own Larry Weber at the keyboard, Valentine sing-along, and exciting desserts are guaranteed.  February 15, 7:00 PM, Phoenix V Meeting Room.
    • Farewell Potluck – Linda Rackers will again host our potluck supper at Phoenix Von February 28 beginning at 1 PM.  More to come as the date approaches.
    • First Annual Boat Tour – Carol Keppler will host the Scenic Magnolia River Boat Ride on March 5.  The trip will begin at 10 AM and end at noon.  The cost for the event is $10.00 per person.
  • Trivia Night – The 9th Annual Trivia Night will take place February 21th at the Orange Beach Event Center at the Wharf.  The event, run totally by the Missouri Club and supported by other Snowbird Clubs and local friends, has raised approximately $60,000 over the years for the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores libraries as well as monies for other local organizations such as the Literary Council and the Coastal Chorale.  Tickets are $15.00 per person or $120 per table.  The Colliers hope to have a sell-out crowd this year.  The “bring your everything” evening will feature ten rounds of questions.  
  • Other Snow Bird Clubs’ Activities
    • Pancake Breakfast – Randy Hall is chairman for our club.  The event will take place February 14; funds raised are for the Fire Department. 
    • Brat Fest – February 7.  Missouri will once again work the trash detail.  Nick Barr will serve as Missouri Club chair for the activity.  Funds raised are for the Fire Department.
    • Lo-Country Boil – Larry Weber, chair for Missouri Snowbirds, reported that the event will take place February 20 at St. Andrews Church on Fort Morgan Road.  Funds will once again support the Little Zoo.  Missouri members will park cars.  See Larry if you would like tickets which are $12.00 each.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

  • Bob reminded everyone of our website, mosnowbirds.org.  Harold Weaver keeps the site up-to-date. Meeting Minutes  will be posted there for review.
  • Golf – Dale reported that we will once again play golf each Wednesday, 1 PM, at Craft Farms.  We play co-ed, 9 hole scramble if it is 40 degrees or above.  See Dale for Russ Reed’s phone number if interested.
  • Judy Collier has extra South Ballwin Community Theater tickets.  See Judy for details.
  • Breakfasts will be on alternate Wednesdays from meetings and will take place at Perdido Beach Resort at 9 AM.  Valet parking is available and the venue will provide a spacious room and buffet for $9.00 per person.

NEW BUSINESS

  • Glen Lakes Golf Course would like to do a presentation to the club about what they have to offer our golfers.  Bob proposed that we suggest they purchase a table for Trivia Night and allow them to make their presentation.  Members agreed to his proposal. 
  • January 13, Foley will host a Snow Bird Coffee from 9-12.
  • Date forthcoming for the Orange Beach Condo Tour.
